Fringe festival first generated from Edinburgh International Festival when uninvited small performers gathered and had performances freely. It soon attracted lots of audiences with their new and striking character. Later on, gained much more popularity, Fringe became an original term on its own.
Tongyeong International Music Festival Fringe (TIMF Fringe) got an idea from Edinburgh Festival Fringe to lead more active participation from people to the festival. Free from pre-selection, open-access to all kinds of performance, TIMF Fringe is open to everyone, and performers and audiences are together to run the festival.
In 2002, having started with 36 participating teams of about 200 members, TIMF Fringe was just a local event, an accessory to main events with problems like limited space and much improvement required. Like the festival itself has improved with years` of experience, followed by successful concerts-Yiruma recital (2004), all Alma Maters composed by Isang Yun with choirs and singer Youngnam Cho (2003) and Yoondohyun Band who sang the theme song of World Cup 2002 (2002)- TIMF Fringe has flourished: 65 teams of over 1000 performers have participated for TIMF Fringe 2005.:There have been more spaces available for TIMF Fringe, besides Fringe Hall at the Festival House and Culture Field, churches around Tongyeong, schools in Tongyeong and jazz bar, de Bassus and under seas tunnel have opened their doors to TIMF Fringe. This year, TIMF Fringe 2005 was even more exciting than other years with four-fingered pianist Heeya Lee`s recital and special jazz concerts of Cyminology and Arjona.
